The Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge is a job creation program of the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa, which features idea pitching competition for young entrepreneurs and innovators in Africa and startup grant awards for the best ideas.
The overall impacts of the first edition of the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge, which was held in Owerri, Imo State, from May 22 – 24, 2019, speak volumes of the need to do more for the youths, especially the unemployed graduates among them.
The idea pitching competition, which we adopted as our method of selecting the 10 finalists from the Boot Camp as well as during the Grand finale was a paradigm shift from what youths in Imo Sate and across the country are used to.
This method was highly commended by our partners, such as National Directorate for Employment (NDE), Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), NAFDAC, Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and other stakeholders that participated in the event.
It is very remarkable to point out that the grant competition, which started with a boot camp exposed the youths, who were mainly between 18 and 40 years of age to the enormous potentials that reside in them but unknown to them.
Following the resounding impacts we made in the first edition, our Board of Trustees has approved a second edition of the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge to hold in Abuja in August, 2019.
This edition shall be open for all young Nigerians, who have ideas that can be launched into successful businesses or social enterprises.
Submission of applications from interested Nigerian youths will begin on August 01, 2019 and close on August 16, 2019.
The Online Boot Camp will begin on August 19 and end on August 23, 2019 while the Grand finale will take place on Friday, August 30, 2019 at a venue to be announced in due course.
Through the Enterprise Challenge, about 1,000 Nigerian youths who have various business ideas shall be admitted into the Online Boot Camp which commences on the 19th of August, 2019.
At the end of the 5 days Boot Camp, 10 finalists with the best ideas shall emerge and will be allowed to “pitch” their ideas before the general public and a Panel of Judges at the grand finale on August 30, 2019.
The final pitching competition will produce the star prize winners, who shall go home with the following grant prizes:
1st Prize: N1 million
2nd Prize: N700,000 (seven hundred thousand naira)
3rd Prize: N500,000 (five hundred thousand naira)
4th – 10th N50,000 consolation prizes for each
All the participants shall be exposed to other funding opportunities, such as the CBN funded AGSMEIS, the Ignite Youth Program of the Bank of Industry, She Ventures of FCMB Plc, the Niger Delta Renewal Energy Fund of All On, etc.
