Two-day qualitative research capacity building workshop:

Introduction to qualitative research methods and qualitative data analysis software.

For whom: The workshop is suitable for anyone involved in designing, conducting, evaluating or managing qualitative research. Prior knowledge about qualitative research is desirable but not required.

Introduction:The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the fundamental concepts of qualitative research and equip them with practical skills needed to design and implement qualitative research projects. The workshop will highlight the philosophical underpinnings around qualitative research so that participants can understand the basis of its use as a research approach.  We will discuss practical aspects of qualitative research design, sources of qualitative data, sampling, data collection, analysis, and application of findings. This course assumes little or no knowledge of qualitative methods; an advanced course will be available at a later date.

Learning objectives:At the end of the 2-day workshop, participants should:

Demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts of qualitative research.

 Understand what qualitative research can and cannot achieve –alone and with quantitative research.

 Learn various qualitative tools and understand their application in different types of research.

 Understand different approaches to qualitative data analysis and their suitability for different types of qualitative data.

 Develop a basic understanding of how to analyze qualitative data on paper and using computer assisted qualitative data software.Course OutlineDay 1

 Generating qualitative data: Ethnographic and observational methods, fieldwork and ethical conduct.

 Writing qualitative research.Course format:The format of the course includes a combination of interactive lectures, group sessions, personal reflection exercises, hands-on experience of the software and presentations.Participants are encouraged to bring their research topics to the workshop, so they can develop them further during the practical sessions and receive guidance.Faculty: Dr. Osasuyi Dirisu:

Osasuyi has over 18 years’ experience in public health and development; she is a highly experienced qualitative researcher who has been extensively involved in designing and executing qualitative research projects. She has implemented a wide range of qualitative research projects in Agriculture, Public Health and Development working with hard to reach and vulnerable populations. She has an MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan, a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Lagos and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Pan-Atlantic University (Lagos Business School). Osasuyi obtained a PhD in Public Health from the University of Leeds as a Commonwealth Scholar where she had teaching responsibilities to undergraduate and graduate students at the Nuffield Institute for International Health and Development. She has attended advanced level qualitative research trainings in Europe and USA. Osasuyi was a recipient of the 2015 SOUTER-ISAM Fellowship Award for Clinicians awarded by the International Society for Addiction Medicine. She is a member of the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology.

Dr Esmie Kainja:

Esmie has over two decades of experience in public health, development and social policy. She has extensive qualitative research experience working with vulnerable groups; women, orphans and people living with disabilities as well as experience in designing and evaluating social protection programs. Esme obtained a BA in Nutrition and Health Sciences from the University of Malawi, a Masters in Public Health from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Public Health from the University of Leeds in 2012. She currently oversees the Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare ministry in Malawi and continues to lead research and interventions relating to gender/ social policy.

Dr Babatunde Sanni

Dr Sanni is a Global Public Health Specialist based in South Africa with over 18 years’ senior technical, research and programme management experience in International and National Health Programs. He holds an MBBS Degree from the University of Ibadan, a Master’s in Public Health (MPH), the Yale’s Advance Health Management Programme Certificate (AHMP) and a Monitoring and Evaluation certificate from the University of Pretoria. His career and project experience span WHO, BMGF, GIZ, UN Agencies, USAID, CDC, Howard University, South Africa Department of Health, JSI, Janssen & Janssen Pharmaceutical and MSH among others. He has extensive experience conducting program reviews, monitoring and evaluation, baseline/ endline/impact assessments and policy development across Africa. He is a Director at First Career Development Consult Nigeria and Optimum Model (Optidel)-Global Public Health and Environmental Consulting.

Course Fee: 60,000 naira per participant
