iCreate Africa hosts Africa’s biggest technical & vocational skills competition in Abuja

The maiden edition of the skill fest held last month, October 26 – 27, 2018 at the A Class Park, FCT Abuja, Nigeria.

The skill fest promotes development of TVET

iCreate Africa 2018 was targeted at promoting and encouraging the development of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as an important tool and sustainable solution to Nigeria’s high rate of youth unemployment, skills shortage and industrialization.

Themed “giving power to the makers of things”, iCreate Africa created a platform for the young emerging workforce and proactive organizations who understand that engaging the youth is the best strategy for addressing labour challenges.

Industry Leaders, Government Officials, International Development Agencies, Educational Institutions and partners all gathered together to support the TVET space in Nigeria by sharing best practices, insights in their various TVET promotion activities, whilst, discussing the need for policy-making and other measures to change the perception of technical and vocational skills in the country.

The 2-days Skill Competition featured 14 different skill sets in the construction, IT/ Tech, Culinary and creative arts industries respectively with 85 participants from all parts of Nigeria and West-African countries.

The grand Closing Ceremony which featured a special guest performance Mr. P of the musical duo P-Square witness the emergence of winners who are now referred to as “Skill Champions”, awarded with ceremonial medals, internship opportunities with top organizations, cash prizes, and equipment donations.

Creative Arts category: Mr. Afolabi Caleb Kayode (Art) Ms. Malissa Onojo (Tailoring) Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi (Barbing) Mr. Kingsley Ihejirika (Hair Dressing) Ms. Faiza Usman Adamu (Make-Up)

Construction category: Mr. Prince Isitua (Bricklaying) Mr. Joshua Moses Olaotan Olalekun (Carpentry) Mr. Kumshuan Alpha Taldang (Plumbing) Mr. Oladoja Peter (Tiling)

The winners of the Social Impact Challenge awarded with N500,000 comprised of Mr. Olumide Gabriel Areo, Ms. Safiya Garba and Mr. Ayo Abbass who formed an entity called REEBA – a company addressing specific needs of SME’s and rendering business development services in Katsina State, through the transfer of business knowledge, skills and information.

With the support of its dedicated partners, iCreate Africa pledged to be taking all 14 winners to the World Skills 2019 in Kazan, Russia – an important step towards adding Nigeria as the “Power House of Skills” on the map of the World Skills member countries.

Inspired by iCreate Africa’s participation in the World Skills 2017 in Abu Dhabi, the maiden edition of the iCreate Skill Fest 2018, under the leadership of iCreate Africa’s CEO/Founder, Mr. Bright Jaja was supported by Robert Bosch Nigeria Limited, GIZ, Industrial Training Fund, Cachez Group, Sterling Bank Plc, German Embassy, Nigeria Embassy Berlin, Julius Berger Nigeria, Trace TV, Sound City and The Fashion Academy Abuja.
